The view looking into the SF Valley near the summit.

Hike Location:  Franklin Canyon Park is 605 acres of protected space in the middle of Los Angeles. The terrain is chaparral, grasslands, and oak woodlands, with a three-acre lake home to thriving waterfowl.  It is sandwiched between Beverly Crest and Trousdale Estates.

NOTE: The Northern entrance to Franklin Canyon (off Mullholland Dr.) is CLOSED due to DWP work. Only the Southern entrance, which is off the intersection of Coldwater Canyon Drive and N. Beverly Drive, is open.

Trail: We have chosen the Hastain Trail which is an up and back to the summit overlook in the park. The trail is about 50/50-the 1st half is uphill and the 2nd half is downhill for a total of about 3.5 miles. There is a good deal of elevation gain. The trail is mostly wide with some narrow parts in the lower half. There are some steep sections, particularly just below the summit. We do recommend hiking poles as some of the steep parts have a good deal of loose rock. There are no water crossings.

There is little shade; only at the lower parts of the trail, so wear layers of clothes, a hat, sunscreen; bring water and snacks.

Dogs are welcome but must be on leash. We saw several on our pre-hike and not too many other hikers.

Parking:  At the trailhead, near the terminus of Lake Drive. Restrooms are adjacent to the trailhead.

Registration: This event is open to everyone. There is no cost to attend. BUT you must register and provide an emergency contact and that contact's cell phone for yourself and any guests. More details will be sent via email, so be sure to include your correct email address.
